The comparisons with My Bloody Valentine are all but inevitable, but Collapse still bring something new to the table with their first full-length record. Hailing from Saitama/Tokyo, Collapse have put out several singles and EPs in the years leading up to this release. Their live shows are bookended with heavy, rip-roaring songs like ‘Rip’, which dictate the energy of their live shows. This track appears here, but the album also opens up a more melancholic side to the band’s sound. ‘Implosion’s jangly guitars and loudening drums give way to whisper vocals which take center stage in the middle of the song. ‘Garden’ may be the highlight of the album, with those same jangly guitars intermingling with chimes to create a symphonic sound not dissimilar from Cocteau Twins’ ‘Treasure’ album. This is a great album to catch as Collapse really get going, as this will certainly be the beginning of much new music to come and proves that Collapse are no black sheep when it comes to this dreamy sound.
