DJ510 Mariko returns with the first full-length of her newly established project. Though more cleanly produced than the demo we sold earlier in our distro, don’t expect anything less than an android assault of trance beats, spidery, glitched-out drum machines, and artificially distorted sirens. Of course, this harsh discordance clashes with bubblegum sweet vocals dotted over lilting piano melodies on other tracks. Mariko is not interested in creating something cohesive or even remotely predictable; here, she applies a production technique usually reserved for mass-produced singles designed to shoot to the top of the Oricon singles charts and obliterates expectations track-by-track, creating a record that is impossible to recommend and similarly impossible to shoot down. (Do you hate sugary J-Pop? Buy it! Do you hate sugary J-Pop? Avoid it!) Taken as an experience, it’s worth sticking your head into the sonic sprocket and appreciating it for its smooth, slickly produced veneer in the middle (LSD) or the jagged edges that send the record into a screamadelic frenzy (Breeeeeak Out!!!!!) An album made for those who are tired of the run-of-the-mill, happy malaise of modern pop.
