At long last and after much hype in Tokyo’s indie scene this past year, Spool’s first album finally arrives! Years back, Gerpfast Kolektif released a “discography album” of uncollected early versions of the trio’s tracks. It immediately sold out and was just another signal of this band’s budding talent. Now a four-piece band, Spool has further filled out their sound and it is exactly what you expected stylistically with even better execution. “Be My Valentine” has no shame in being straight MBV worship, but for every reverb-laced tribute there are two other tracks showcasing Spool’s uniquely sullen take on the genre. “Shotgun” surprises with its lacey vocal melody and incredible work from the rhythm section that makes the guitars sound far grander than their simple disarming melody suggests. “Blooming in the Morning” takes a midwestern math rock structure and slows it way the hell down to hypnotic effect. And old live favorites like “No Thank You” and “Sway, Fadeaway” return in re-recorded versions that prove, like the album as a whole, that Spool are in it for the long run. A fantastic and essential experience.
